EMDR Psychotherapy & Intensives

For those looking for support to explore habits, behaviour patterns, present issues and past distress - and who want to integrate new ways of supporting long-lasting personal transformation and change.

Sessions are weekly, fortnightly or arranged in intensives, depending on your needs. Regular weekly sessions are either 60 or up to 90 minutes, and intensives range from 90 minutes to full day or weekend timeframes, again depending on your needs.

In all of these I bring an integrative psychotherapeutic approach, drawing from a range of modalities including EMDR, body-based interventions and mindfulness exercises, helping to support mind, heart and body with an attachment informed and trauma informed understanding of healing and personal development.

EMDR forms the structure of my approach, and stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is traditionally used for PTSD and traumatic events, but more recently research has shown it to be helpful across many other areas, supporting in transforming and rewiring past experiences and present-day distresses, integrating them in the nervous system to be able to move forward and move on.

Issues I've helped with include Depression, Life Transitions, Relationship Difficulties, Communication Issues, Attachment Complexity, Difficulties with Self-Esteem, Parenting Challenges, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Professional/Career Issues, Spirituality, Gender and Sexual Identity, LGBTQIA+ Counselling, Medical and Health Concerns, Anxiety and Phobias, Pain Management, Stress Management, Sexual Abuse, and Grief, Loss, or Bereavement

I also have experience with other issues that aren't so easy to pinpoint or name, but show up as niggles and knowings that we keep to ourselves for fear of being judged for 'not being normal'. This can be overthinking, procrastination or 'laziness', lack of emotion (but wanting connection), a knowing that something's wrong even though you can't quite work out what that is, despair for what's happening in the world, concern for the future of humanity, rage and anger, frustration that you know what needs to change but you can't seem to make it happen (whether for yourself or someone else) or avoidance behaviours 'cos it's all just too much...

Whatever your needs, you're welcome to book a free 30 minute call to meet me, discuss where you're at and help decide on next steps.

Places are currently available for both short and long-term therapy options.

Katharine Brayne
Hello! I'm Katharine and I'm a registered EMDR and Integrative Psychotherapist, based in the UK and working worldwide online, specialising in authenticity, attachment and the brain-body connection.

I help individuals (18+) with regular sessions or deep-dive intensives, addressing the challenges of their day-to-day or of long-standing patterns, getting clear on future goals, resolving present triggers and releasing past pain to create long-lasting, sustainable change for a positive impact in their lives.

In the past 2 years I've helped more than 20 clients, to resolve traumas, overcome long-standing fears, feel safer and calmer in their bodies, better understand their nervous system and know how to self-soothe and support the ups and downs of day-to-day life, and learn how to communicate or meet their needs in ways they maybe never realised were possible.

Upfront, my goal is to make myself redundant, meaning ultimately that my clients have learnt how to live and thrive in their lives and in the world without feeling they need constant therapy.

I've also helped clients enter new (or revive stagnant) relationships with confidence and clarity of who they are and how they wish to communicate, have coached clients in emotional literacy and how to meet their inner-life experience with safety, trust and self-compassion, and both resolved the intensity of the inner critic and coached how to work with these inner-parts and learn to reduce conflict (whether externally with others and internally with themselves).

And for all my clients to date (who choose this as part of their therapy goal, or have perhaps a more spiritual lens or wish to explore) to finally understand or contextualise the 'red thread' of their life biography, early life upbringing and make sense of their journey so far. Thus allowing greater peace, energy and inner freedom in how they choose to navigate their next steps and future.

It's incredible work and I love what I do, holding space for complexity, bringing laughter and trust and relational warmth into what is not always an easy process, yet witnessing the incredible courage, openness (even when afraid or defensive) and bravery each client brings to our work together.

It's an honour and a joy to support my clients, whether it's just for a few sessions, or for a longer term container of work.

I lightly say, but sincerely mean, 'I've got all your tenses covered':
- present -
- past -
- future -
and the one where this all shows up the most (and we often don't realise)
- the 'tense' of tension in the body

Yup - therapy can be called 'in-tense' for a reason - it's all happening here and now, and yet with EMDR therapy, the work often helps the nervous system finally realise that the past is not happening anymore, even though the body is still holding or feeling it, and trauma recovery, release and reparation happens along the way. And ideally, this happens not just through pain, drama and tears, but through warmth, insight and healthy humour or realism where appropriate.

For context: “Scientists have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain—unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions.”
— Dr. Karyn Purvis

Therefore, in my therapy practice, while we deal with the dark and the difficult, there is also huge room for the light and the laughter that is so powerful and supportive in any healing journey. I've been a teacher and instructor, taught sports through storytelling and games, have travelled the world walking, hiking and mountain-bikepacking, spent a long time getting to know the lands and culture of New Zealand and far flung places, have volunteered and done deep-dive silent meditation retreats to get to know the inner workings of my own mind, heart and body. I've also been burnt out and depressed, have felt incredibly alone and yet warmly connected, with marriage and divorce as part of my background and a complicated early start with gender, sex and sexuality. Along the way, I've explored and discovered a huge amount about life and life process, the archetypes of experience, as well as psychological models of understanding in retrospect, and throughout it all I've met the depths (and avoidances) emotion, from fear to joy and the complexities of relationship that often bring these to the surface.

All of this informs who I am and how I hold space, and none of it is brought directly in the therapy room as that space is sacred to your journey and exploration, your discoveries and development. Yet, having had the life experiences I've had, I'm told by my clients that they feel safe, held, seen and wholly accepted in that space, as there's room for human-ness, and a deep trust in the process of 'becoming'

And just in case you're thinking, yeah, sounds great, but I don't have trust right now. Or particularly that much hope. For you, I invite:
where there's no trust, bring hope,
and where there's no hope, bring yourself just as you are,
and let's see what we can make possible, together.

If any of this has resonated so far, I'd love to invite you for a free 30-minute call to get to know each other and see whether working together is a good fit for where you're at, and for where, who or how you want to be.

I look forward to connecting with you.
